Calgary’s economic downtown has had a number of impacts on commercial real estate, and while taxes and vacancy rates dominate the headlines, security guards in commercial buildings are on the frontline of the social disorder that appears to be on the rise in downtown and the Beltline. From October 2018 to March 2019, Dr. Glen Kitteringham of the Kitteringham Security Group conducted research into how security guards manage workplace violence in Calgary and Edmonton. It is a not a matter of whether the guards experience violence but how much verbal harassment and physical violence they must respond to on a daily basis.
